The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow. And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them: Deuteronomy 28:12-13
The Biblical principle indicates to us that we are “in the world but not of the world.” This is a principle to live by in everything we do, including finances. There should be a distinct difference between how Christians handle money and how the world handles money. Unfortunately, statistics show that there is no difference between church goers and nonchurch goers. Bankruptcy rates, debt levels, and even giving percentages are the same. Even divorce rates due to finance-related problems are identical. We have fallen short of God’s calling for our lives. Jesus spoke about finances in two thirds of his parables. Why? There are two reasons. First of all, it is important how we handle our finances. It is part of our testimony. Secondly, God knew this would be a great stumbling block for Christians. Satan uses this area of our lives to limit our Christian growth by competing for the hearts of man. If Jesus is not Lord over our money, then he is not our Lord at all.
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24)
The world’s view of money has crept into the lives of Christian families everywhere. Greed, pride, and envy are destroying God’s people. Families are stressed, marriages are broken, debt is uncontrolled, and tithes and offerings have been restricted. Many Christians are actually funding the work of Satan through their own investments without even knowing it!
“But they that will [to] be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (1 Timothy 6:9-11)
